As to the point of contacting Marvell or the motherboard manufacturer, they are not the ones including the drivers in a potentially automatic download. Before you say it, yes you can stop the automatic part, but many users do not have the knowledge, ability or desire to screen their drivers and just trust Microsoft.
Microsoft owns this one. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread. Microsoft doesn't test those drivers enough. Yeah it's manufacturer's fault but Microsoft should check what is uploaded to the update servers or at least listen when such issues exist. I had the same issue with a p5q deluxe motherboard, Win 7 pro I have everything up to date - bios, firmware, drivers, OS, etc.
I unfortunately installed the optional driver through windows update. I have tried to reinstall the old drivers latest on Asus site , but the newer Windows drivers persist. I have found a solution though. In my bios there is an option to enable the Marvell boot rom after enabling the Marvel IDE controller.
If I have both enabled, then my computer boots normally. No freezing. I did notice even with the current drivers from Asus, that with the Marvell boot rom disabled, the system would hang for several seconds at the Windows splash screen.
Then I suggest you go to the Marvell website and download the newest driver to see if it works. The drivers from the Windows Update are supplied by the manufacturer. They are not written by Microsoft. And you honestly believe Microsoft should extensively test all the thousands of drivers proved by the manufacturers? I am not particularly technically inclined and place some trust in the Microsoft update process usually without any issues. Of course it was a disaster. My system would hang on reboot with the Start Icon and the little circle of dots going around and around and around. I tried the F8 recovery to no avail. I wasn't sure which driver was causing the hang so I reinstalled again and changed a few things, ran the update including options and presto another hang It took me 5 installs and updates before I didn't select the options Yes I might be considered a bit slow in the problem solving stakes.
It is very helpful to have someone else confirm what I guessed was the problem. I need more space. This is hard to diagnose on a new install especially since on Win7 the Marvell drivers were working fine Tech Advice - Only make one system change at a time i.
