The wife an I stopped for the night on the way back from texas to ohio and could hear a whining noise coming from behind one of the cabinets in our bedroom.

I had just plugged into shore power 50 amp line so I went outside to investigate. I was tired from 13 hours of driving and the relay wasnt hot so I just went to bed. I got home and noticed the same noise and the next morning I started the engine to move the RV and got a low voltage warning Is there anything to be done? Im guessing the relay is stuck and continuously on but it seems as though these things are really expensive Which battery bank was low when you got the warning?

House or chassis engine? Agree, though, that it sounds like a stuck relay. You can probably get it to reset try a sharp tap with a hammer , but it will happen again, either next time or somewhat later. Hey Gary, Chassis battery is low.

I just tried the hammer method and that didn't work so I may take it off and see if I can find anything wrong with it. I did find a manual for the relay that has a schematic so I think Ill try and troubleshoot it a little more tomorrow. Just not really sure if it was the relay or something else causing the problem. Is there any information out there about the recall? I will look into it and see if maybe that is the source or another issue all together The hum could simply be the Big Boy "working as designed".

I don't know what coach you have, but many models use the isolation relay to provide chassis charging from shore power.

If the chassis batteries are low and not accepting a charge, a lot of amps will be pouring through the relay and it might hum and get hot. In a perfect world it would be well-enough designed and built so that it did not, but maybe the quality isn't all it could be. In any case, a chassis battery that is internally shorted or has a high resistance connection somewhere could place a high demand on the isolation relay. I would be giving those batteries a thorough check before deciding the relay is bad.

Jeff Moderator Emeritus. Our relay or charger hums fairly loud when first plugged in with a heavy load and then drops to a gentle hum as the charge tapers off as the batteries reach a charged state. The relays in my auto transfer switch sometimes hum rather loudly too. We sometimes notice it late at night when the park and coach get very quiet. John From Detroit Well-known member. Some Many in fact Converters seem to not know the lyrics so they hum along.

The BIRD circuitry generally applies a hysteresis, to the relay drop out, comprised of both a time element and a voltage threshold. This is designed to prevent relay chatter, or hum, from repetitive picking and dropping when the battery bank voltage levels are simply too far apart and the result puts too large a load on the charger.

I'm not sure that the Big Boy incorporates a time element in it's design. Just a SWAG. I see that JFD disagrees with me. I called Intellitec yesterday and talked to a technician who said the noise is normal and it means the relay is doing its job Said its modulating at a high frequency? Im an amateur radio operator and know some basics in electronics, not an expert by any means but it still doesnt seem right to me. I started it yesterday after being on shore power for 8 hours and still got a low voltage warning after starting, threshold is Lou may be correct in the chassis batteries starting to fail, the alternator is fairly new, replaced last fall by the prior owner.

I dont know when the batteries were replaces because the date stickers are not marked on the batteries so I may remove them and have them tested. Click to expand Larry N. Well-known member.
