Windows 2003 memory usage programs or system cache

While Performance Monitor has many different counters that you can monitor, you should monitor the activity of the following components first:. When you do, you'll see the screen shown in Figure B. Some network counters require that you install the Network Monitor driver for Network Monitor in order to use them.

Some of the counters listed here may not be available on your computer because a necessary service has not been installed or you have not activated the counters. For instance, in order to capture logical-disk counter data, you must type diskperf —yv at the command prompt, which allows the disk performance statistics driver to report data for logical drives.

After you've selected your counters and start tracking events, you can watch Performance Monitor track the counters and draw a graph representing them. A baseline is a performance level that you determine to be acceptable.

You should monitor your server over a period of time during normal work conditions to begin creating your baseline. Once you gather the data, you can analyze it to determine where there might be problems or bottlenecks. Microsoft has outlined some recommended baselines for different counters. The ones below will give you a good start for creating a baseline that meets your needs.

Performance Monitor can help you identify performance problems and allow you to analyze the data. If your servers' resources are insufficient, you may need to upgrade components such as RAM, hard disks, paging files, etc. It may also be necessary to balance workloads among resources. Some programs monopolize a resource and won't allow other programs to use it. Those programs may need to be reconfigured or rewritten.

If this is set to a low number -- to reduce the actual space being allocated on your HD for virtual memory -- This could be the cause of your problems as well since XP needs a relatively large amount of "swap" just to boot up remember when you installed it? It required 2 GB just to install. This is especially true if you've got the service packs and other updates that add even more stuff to the system as a whole with both functionality and backup files. DmZ , Jan 2, My paging file is turned off.

On my previous computer I had it set up like that with no problems. On bit versions of Windows Vista operating systems, kernel resources are allocated dynamically. The working set of the system file cache increases to consume the virtual address range of the kernel mode at the expense of other kernel resources. The limitation of this memory range is less than 2 GB.

However, the cache can exhaust the virtual address space in the kernel. This can cause allocation failures for other kernel components.

On bit versions of Windows operating systems, the size of the virtual address range is typically larger than the physical RAM. In this situation, the working set for the system file cache can increase to consume most of the physical RAM.

The memory management algorithms in Windows 7 and Windows Server R2 operating systems were updated to address many file caching problems that were found in earlier versions of Windows. There are only certain unique situations in which you have to implement this service on computers that are running Windows 7 or Windows Server R2.

To determine whether your system is affected by this issue, install the SysInternals RamMap tool. You can obtain the tool from the following Windows Sysinternals website:. This displays several columns that show the current pattern of memory usage. Click the Active column to sort by the number of bytes used, and note the top usage directly under the total. Figure 1. Example RamMap output in which the computer is experiencing the issue.
